Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. After her father's departure the family of Ford, they were managed by her grandmother, mom and godparents. She suffered from an anxiety disorder based on the word association when she was a teenager. Ford began performing in her teens and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. She got into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after only a few weeks, she realized it was not for her. Ford instead applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was able to secure a place on her fourth application. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. Shaun Dingwall would go on to have regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford was able to graduate in 1993. However, she made her television debut in the 1992 episode Surgical Spirit. She adopted the name Catherine Tate. Tate was seen in television programs including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London's Burning in the Nineties. The regular theatre work she performed led her to join The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. But Tate soon began to garner attention for her stand-up comic, which she added to her resume in the year 1996.
